π₯Ί Drawing from my own experience of dealing with overwhelm and health anxiety.
π Tune in for practical strategies and actionable tips to regain control and find balance in your personal and professional life.
As a handmade business owner, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of tasks, responsibilities, and decisions that come with running your own creative enterprise. From managing your online shop, to creating new products, to marketing your brand, the to-do list can quickly become daunting and leave you feeling like you're drowning in a sea of obligations.
Guess what? It doesn't have to be this way. In this blog, we'll explore proven strategies to help you overcome overwhelm and regain control of your handmade business.
Limit Your Consumption of "To-Do" Content
One of the primary drivers of overwhelm for many handmade business owners is the constant consumption of "to-do" content. Whether it's watching tutorial videos, reading blog posts, or listening to podcasts, the amount of information and advice available can quickly become overwhelming. Instead of trying to implement every single tip and strategy you come across, it's important to be selective and focus on the resources that truly resonate with you and your business.
"Listen to one person that you know that you like and that you trust and just consume a little portion of their stuff." By limiting the amount of content you consume, you'll be able to avoid feeling like you need to do everything and instead focus on the most impactful actions for your business.
Take a Step Back and Recharge
I’ve just done this myself… I had a whole month off my business and it was magnificent. Keep your eyes peeled for a future blog about how I did it whilst keeping my business running.
When the overwhelm starts to creep in, it's crucial to take a step back and give yourself a break. "Step away, physically shut the PC down, close the laptop lid, turn off your phone and put it down." This could be as simple as a 20-minute walk or weekend break away – the key is to remove yourself from the constant demands of your business and give your mind a chance to rest and recharge.
It’st really helpful to ask yourself, "What's the worst that can happen?" By exploring the potential consequences of your current situation, you can often put things into perspective and realise that the overwhelming feelings may be more exaggerated than the reality of the situation.

Break It Down into Manageable Steps
When you're feeling overwhelmed, it can be easy to get caught up in the big picture and lose sight of the individual tasks that need to be accomplished. To combat thisI link to "step it out" – by breaking down my goals and projects into smaller, more manageable steps.
For example, if you're struggling with a technical issue like setting up a Facebook pixel, start by identifying the specific problem, then break it down into a step-by-step plan of action. This could include:
- Identifying where the problem is occurring
- Determining the specific code or configuration causing the issue
- Reaching out to a Facebook group or hiring someone to help resolve the problem
- Implementing the solution and testing it
By breaking down your challenges into smaller, more actionable steps, you can avoid feeling paralysed by the sheer magnitude of the task at hand and instead focus on taking one step at a time.
Embrace the Power of Small, Daily Steps
It's important to focus on taking small, consistent steps each day to move your business forward. "Do one to three things a day that get you towards where you want to go."
This could involve anything from creating a new product listing, to scheduling social media posts, to reaching out to potential collaborators. The key is to avoid the temptation to try and do everything at once, which can quickly lead to burnout. Instead, focus on taking small, manageable actions each day that will gradually build momentum and help you achieve your long-term objectives.
Establish Boundaries and a "No" List
One of the most effective ways to combat overwhelm is to establish clear boundaries and a "no" list for your business. "Having boundaries in place is so, so good." It could be something like setting specific work hours, designating time for deep focus, or even saying "no" to certain requests or opportunities that don't align with your business goals.
You might decide that you're not going to answer emails or messages during certain hours of the day, or that you're not going to participate in virtual summits or other events that don't fit within your niche or brand. By setting these boundaries and sticking to them, you can protect your time and energy, and avoid the temptation to overcommit yourself.
Create a simple "no" list – a list of the things you simply won't do, no matter how much pressure you may face. This could include refusing to offer rush orders, providing refunds for products older than a certain timeframe, or taking on tasks that fall outside of your core competencies.
By having a clear "no" list in place, you can avoid the guilt and stress that often comes with saying "no," and instead focus your time and energy on the activities that truly matter for your business.
Embrace the Power of Journaling
Finally, if you're still feeling overwhelmed after implementing the strategies above, turn to journaling as a way to process your emotions and gain clarity. "If you're still feeling overwhelmed, you've done all these things and you're still feeling [it], write it down, journal it out, angrily scribble – just get your emotions out so that you can process them in your mind that little bit easier."
Journaling can be a powerful tool for handmade business owners, as it allows you to:
- Identify the root causes of your overwhelm
- Explore potential solutions or strategies for addressing the issue
- Release pent-up emotions and stress in a healthy, constructive way
- Gain a fresh perspective on your challenges and opportunities
Whether you prefer to write in a physical journal or type out your thoughts on a computer, the act of putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) can be a powerful way to gain clarity, reduce stress, and regain a sense of control over your handmade business.
Embrace a Balanced Approach to Your Handmade Business
Overcoming overwhelm in your handmade business is not a one-time fix, but rather an ongoing process of self-awareness, boundary-setting, and strategic prioritisation. By implementing the strategies outlined in this blog – from limiting your content consumption to establishing clear boundaries and a "no" list – you can reclaim your time, energy, and focus, and build a sustainable, thriving handmade business that aligns with your values and goals.
Remember, the key is to find a balanced approach that works for you and your unique business. Don't be afraid to experiment, adjust your strategies as needed, and seek support from trusted mentors or communities along the way. With the right mindset and tools, you can conquer the overwhelm and unlock your full potential as a handmade business owner.
